Floral Displays

Floral displays in NottinghamAll round the year, our floral displays bring us compliments. But in the summer they become the City’s pride and joy as Nottingham bursts into colour with a fresh series of stunning floral displays.

Developing our own style

In creating Nottingham in Bloom’s floral displays we use two distinct techniques: Traditional style bedding, and the ‘Nottingham Contemporary’ style.

Our Traditional beds allow us to use a time-honoured palette of bedding plants in a formal way for key heritage sites, with use of 19th Century plants such as Coleus, Pelargonium and Canna an important part of the picture.

Nottingham Contemporary style is synonymous with the city’s success over the past few years, giving our team of horticulturists the opportunity to experiment with a wide range of plant materials grouped informally in relaxed colour schemes. Sustainable plant materials such as perennials and shrubs are used alongside herbaceous plants and grasses and exotic plants such as Phormium.

Since 2000, the designs for Nottingham's floral displays have been a co-ordinated effort between our own City Council team and several experienced and inspirational horticulturists from elsewhere in the city. These include Ian Cooke, the grounds manager at the University of Nottingham, who is the current chair of the Design Group, a representative from Johnsons Controls who manage Boots gardens as well as other external horticultural experts.
