City event marks International Disabled People's Day

An event in Nottingham to unite disabled people in the city and promote health and well-being marks International Disabled People's Day.

It takes place at the Deaf Society at 22 Forest Road West, Nottingham NG7 4EQ on December 3.

There will be workshops, advice and information stalls by Nottingham City Council Community Cohesion teams,  Nottinghamshire Disabled People's Movement, Compass Drugs and Alcohol, Domestic Violence/Roshni, Open Minds, Remploy, Mental Health, Speaking Up, Nottinghamshire Police, The Disability Living Centre, the Deaf Centre,  Stonebridge City Farm, the Health Nurse – Body MOT, Royal Society for the Blind and the Friends of L'Arche.

There are art workshops throughout the day and sessions on stress management, deaf awareness, chair-based exercises and relaxation, and a drama performance takes place between 12 midday and 1pm.

Councillor Dave Trimble, Nottingham City Council's Portfolio holder for Leisure, Culture and Customers, said:  "International Disabled People's Day is the global day connecting disabled communities all around the world and inspiring them to achieve their full potential. The event in Nottingham has been organised to strengthen community cohesion, promote health and wellbeing and unite disabled people around common issues.  The day will bring groups, individuals and health projects together to celebrate diversity and provide the opportunity for networking, sharing information and health related issues."

A crèche catering for children under 5 years will be available although booking is essential.
