Economy
This page contains information about the local economy for both Nottingham City and the Greater Nottingham area.
Greater Nottingham is defined as the area covered by the Greater Nottingham Partnership, i.e. the City of Nottingham, the districts of Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe, and the Hucknall area of Ashfield district. Greater Nottingham is used because it is a good approximation of the local labour market and the potential market for businesses.

Workplace Jobs (2008 Annual Business Inquiry)
- The Annual Business Inquiry (ABI) is the most comprehensive source of workplace data available but it does not include very small organisations, some charities. and the self-employed
- The Office for National Statistics (ONS) surveys larger companies each year and smaller companies less frequently on a rolling basis
- Organisations provide information on their structures and numbers of employees, and this is used by the ONS to estimate jobs figures at a local level
- The latest official estimates from the ABI show there are 299,700 workplace jobs based in Greater Nottingham and 181,400 of these are located within the City. The number of self-employed working in Greater Nottingham is over 26,000 (taken from the Annual Population Survey Workplace Analysis Oct 08-Sep 09)
- Errors can occur in the ABI because it is a survey. Whilst the results have become more reliable in recent years, the City Council has concerns about the results in the mid- to late-90s. Further details on issues with the historical dataset are available from the Policy and Information Team on 0115 915 5451

Output and productivity (2007 Gross Value Added)
- Gross Value Added (GVA) is the measure of economic output at a local level. It is similar to GDP, but excludes adjustments for taxes and subsidies that are only collected at a national level
- The latest GVA figure (from 2007) for the City is £7.5 billion. GVA per capita is £26,100, significantly above the England average of £20,500 per capita. This is because of the City's role as a local centre for employment
- GVA for Greater Nottingham is £12.1 billion and the GVA per capita is approximately £19,500
