The Sheriff's Commission

The Sheriff of Nottingham's Commission and Advisory Panel met for the first time on 24th July 2009 to lead a debate about how to maximise the impact of the City and County's legendary outlaw, Robin Hood, to the benefit of Nottingham's residents and visitors and the City and County's local, national and international reputation.

There is a clear consensus amongst members of the Advisory Panel and Commission that – whilst Nottingham Castle and the Galleries of Justice pull their weight – the current Robin Hood offer in Nottingham is not significant enough – for local residents or for visitors – and that not enough has been made of the connection the City and County have with Robin Hood, particularly given the international recognition of the character and his wider story and legend.

There are a number of events which create a natural demarcation of the short, medium and long term in developing a coherent, world-class Robin Hood offer in Nottingham.

Short term:

  • May 2010 - release of Robin Hood, the film

Medium term:

  • June 2012 - boost in tourism, London Olympics

Long term:

  • June 2018 - potential host city for the 2018 FIFA World Cup

The Sheriff's Commission agrees that by May 2010, when the next telling of the Robin Hood story will emerge from Hollywood, pushing our famous outlaw once more onto the world stage:

  • Nottingham City Council will have introduced new street signage and promotional materials around Robin Hood
  • Work will have been undertaken to re-sell Robin Hood and its potential benefits to the local population, with particular emphasis on schools
  • The Galleries of Justice and Castle will have refined and improved their exhibitions to deliver a coherent, complementary Robin Hood offer in the city centre

That by June 2012 when the UK will benefit from an Olympics driven tourism boost we need:

  • A new castle-based Robin Hood attraction that includes the wider Nottingham story of rebellion and radicalism

and

  • A new Sherwood Forest visitor attraction

And that by June 2018, if England is to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup, with Nottingham a host city, and we are to make the most of Robin Hood's global recognition, we must have:

  • A new, truly world-class, destination Robin Hood visitor experience

At the end of Councillor Leon Unczur's year in office as Sheriff of Nottingham, in April 2010, he and his Commission will publish a Robin Hood Masterplan that will define our widely shared ambition for Robin Hood.
