Primary Exemplar Project

The new multi-million pound Southwark Primary School is one of the first primary schools in the country to be rebuilt under the Government's Primary Capital Programme and is also one of only 23 'exemplar' primary schools.

Nottingham City Council was been selected as one of 23 pathfinder local authorities to work with the Government ahead of the national roll-out of the Primary Capital Programme.  In return, and subject to agreeing and abiding by the terms and conditions of the award, the Council received £6.5 million of funding to provide a high quality exemplar primary school project.

Southwark Primary School in Basford was been identified as the exemplar project. Construction work started in January 2009 and the new school was completed in April 2010.

The new school caters for 630 children aged 5 to 11 years and 90 children aged 3 to 5 years. The new building has revolutionised primary education in Old Basford by introducing cutting edge technology to the classroom and creating agile, flexible internal and external learning spaces which can respond to future changes in the curriculum and school organisation.

The new school was built by Nottingham's award-winning Local Education Partnership (LEP). To find out more about this project and the LEP, visit www.nottinghambsf.co.uk.
