Nottingham Brown Salt-Glazed Stoneware 1600-1800

more details
Details: In the 18th century Nottingham had a thriving pottery industry. The town was famous throughout the country for its lustrous finely made brown pots, often inscribed with people’s names. This new exhibition is based on the Castle’s own collection, along with public and private loans. It looks at the potteries, the potters, what they made and who they made it for. The pots range from mugs and ale jugs to beautifully inscribed loving cups, from teapots and carved mugs to novelties in the form of bears. Related archaeological material found in the City is also on display. This is the first exhibition devoted to Nottingham stoneware for 30 years and shows why Nottingham has an important place in the history of English ceramics. A series of talks and events relating to the exhibition will be taking place in the summer and autumn.
