What do we do?

We offer a service to children and adults with a visual impairment. We have knowledge and skills that can enable people to continue with many activities, both in their own homes and in their community. We can also enable people to learn new skills.

This service includes:

  • developing skills in mobility such as travelling independently, daily living, preparing meals
  • access to other services and organisations such as supporting applications for Guide Dogs, Talking Book Machines, etc.
  • advice and information about applying for specialist equipment and funding
  • training for example in learning Braille and typing.

How do I get this service?

Anyone with a visual impairment can be referred to us.

To be certified blind or partially sighted your GP needs to refer you to the consultant ophthalmologist at the Eye Clinic in your local hospital. A section of the certificate is then sent to the Team for Registration purposes.

We will then arrange to visit you in your home to offer you information and advice. We may be able to offer this service even if you are unregistered.

If you are not sure if you are eligible for a service from us then give us a call and we will advise you.

What happens next?

In order to find out what type of support you may need we will ask you, your family and carers for help in completing an assessment. As a result of this assessment we may recommend services and specialist equipment to you.

As well as providing you with our services we will also give you information on other services like Social Security benefits, self-help group and voluntary organisations.
