Cemeteries and Crematorium

The Cemeteries and Crematorium team forms part of the Parks and Open Spaces service. The service is responsible for the management of six active cemeteries, fourteen disused burial grounds and the Southern (Wilford Hill) Crematorium.


Our team offer advice and help with burial and cremations, taking into consideration different cultural and religious requirements. The team can also provide advice about memorials.

The Cemeteries and Crematorium Service have been awarded the Charter Mark for excellence in customer service by the Government's Cabinet Office continuously since 1999.

High Wood Cemetery

Opened in 2006 and located at the edge of the City boundary, this Green Flag Award winning cemetery is situated within the green belt. High Wood cemetery provides burials for all faiths within a beautiful, peaceful woodland setting. Cove ring 30 acres of land the site provides a retreat from the surrounding hustle and bustle of the city. High Wood is truly a place in which to reflect, contemplate and relax.

The site is a state of the art modern cemetery and has been planned and designed to provide provision for all faiths and burials as well as incorporating aspects of nature conservation, sustainability and minimisation of energy consumption.

High Wood's design, architecture and landscaping give the cemetery a unique look and feel and complements the site's primary role in sympathetic surroundings. As well as having beautiful rolling meadow grasslands, woodland and distinctive landscaping the site has incorporated sympathetic art amongst the natural form and elements.

As well as providing a service for burials High Wood is a sanctuary for wildlife and offers a peaceful green open space in which to visit and relax amidst beautiful surroundings. Named after the woodland at the heart of the cemetery, High Wood,is a vital corridor for surrounding green space and wildlife, acting as a link between the neighbouring 'Low Wood' and Sellars Wood local nature reserve. For more information on High Wood cemetery click here.

The Cemetery and Crematorium office is based at Southern Cemetery and Crematorium (Wilford Hill). Opening times: 8.30 am to 4.30 pm weekdays only.

Services are held in the Main Chapel every half hour on the half hour (organist accompaniment is provided) or in the West Chapel services are provided every half hour on the quarter hour (an organ is available you or your Funeral Director need to arrange your own organist).

Opened in 1900, Northern Cemetery offers plots for Lawn and Traditional burials and internment of cremated remains. There is also a Garden of Remembrance which is used for the scattering of cremated remains and offers several kinds of memorial dedication. The cemetery has a large chapel with waiting room and Book of Remembrance Room.

Burials in historic grounds are only available to people who own existing plots.

Opening Times

The cemetery grounds are open throughout the year (including Bank Holidays) as follows:-

Northern, Southern, Church, General and Basford Cemeteries

  • January, February, November, December: Mon - Sat 8am to 4pm, Sun - 9am to 4pm
  • March & October: Mon - Sat 8am to 5pm,  Sun 9am to 5pm
  • April, May, June, July, August, September Mon - Sat 8am to 6pm, Sun 9am to 6pm
  • Good Friday: 10am to 5pm
  • Christmas Day: 10am to 4pm

Please note that Book of Remembrance rooms will be closed 30 minutes before the closing time indicated. However, side gates will remain open at all times.

Highwood Cemetery is locked 30 minutes before Northern Cemetery
