Current Major Road Schemes

Here you will find information about any current major road schemes that the City Council is carrying out.

Improving Alfreton Road

In summer 2010 Nottingham City Council will be carrying out the final phase of improvements along Alfreton Road. These are part of the Western Gateway project, which is helping to regenerate and redevelop routes in the western side of the city. As part of the improvements a new pedestrian area at Peveril Street is now complete with high quality paving.

We will take advantage of the quieter traffic levels during the school summer holidays and close Alfreton Road between Canning Circus and Highurst Street to traffic heading away from the city from 26th July until mid-
September 2010.

During this time, traffic and bus services which would usually travel outbound along this section of Alfreton Road will be diverted along Ilkeston Road and Highurst Street instead. Alfreton Road will remain open for traffic and buses heading into the city.

Local businesses on Alfreton Road
While these works take place, businesses will have temporary loading bays. Vehicles will need to follow the diversion signs and travel towards the city along Alfreton Road when they have finished loading.

Citizens living in the area
During the school summer holidays, work will take place to install one new pedestrian crossing and improve two existing crossings. Unfortunately, while this takes place it won't be possible to use the existing pedestrian
crossings. Please keep safe and use other nearby pedestrian crossings on Alfreton Road.

Motorists leaving all side roads along Alfreton Road between Canning Circus and Highurst Street will need to turn out and head up Alfreton Road into the city, as the road will be closed to outbound traffic. In addition, during the period of the diversion, unfortunately there will be no on-street parking along Highurst Street. We would kindly ask citizens to find alternative parking.

Bus passengers
All bus services that would usually travel out of the city along Alfreton Road between Canning Circus and Highurst Street, will instead be diverted along Ilkeston Road and Highurst Street, where there will be a
temporary stop after Holden Street.

Outbound bus services that will follow the diversion are:
Doyles / Veolia:
331
Yourbus: Y81
NCT: L4, L13 L14, 77, 78, 79
Trent Barton: Rainbow 1

These bus services will still be able to use Alfreton Road to head into the city and there will be temporary
bus stops available in the affected section of road.

Finishing touches to the scheme
Once the final phase of the major work is complete by mid-September, and the diversion route has been
removed, we will be able to put the finishing touches to Alfreton Road. We will install two entry features at
Highurst Street and Cromwell Street, just as we have on other side streets along Alfreton Road.
We aim to complete all the improvements along Alfreton Road by the end of September 2010.

Connecting Eastside

Connecting Nottingham's Eastside is a £6.8million project which will transform Sneinton Square, provide high quality pedestrian connections between the city centre and St Ann's and Sneinton, in the Eastside area, as well as improve transport links for cyclists and traffic.

As part of the project Nottingham City Council will be carrying out various pedestrian, cycling and traffic improvements on the routes around Lower Parliament Street and Huntingdon Street. These improvements will take place between January 2010 and spring 2011.
