The Knowledge - Avoid rogue and unlicensed taxi drivers
Nottingham City Council licenses two types of vehicles - Hackney Carriages and Private Hire vehicles. You may refer to them both as Taxis, but legally they are not the same thing. Only the dark green, London style Hackney Carriages can legally be referred to as a 'Taxi'.
A Serious Warning
If you get into a Private Hire car without pre-booking it (that is - you stop it or find it in the street) you may not be covered by insurance. Private Hire drivers call this 'flying' and they know they are breaking the law. If you are involved in an accident you will experience difficulty in claiming for any damage or injuries.
Hackney Carriages
- They have the City of Nottingham coat of arms displayed on both front door panels.
- They have a large white licence plate on the rear of the cab, displaying the words 'City of Nottingham' and a three digit number prefixed by the letter H.
- They can be hailed in the street.
- They operate mostly from city centre ranks.
- They do not need to be pre-booked.
- They all have a fare meter and fare chart displayed inside the cab. Meters MUST be used for any journey within the City boundary, but you may negotiate the fare if the journey ends outside the City boundary. (Clifton campus is within the City boundary, but West Bridgford is outside the City.)
Private Hire Vehicles
- They cannot be legally referred to as a 'taxi'.
- They are usually saloon type vehicles.
- They have a small yellow licence plate on the rear of the car displaying the words 'City of Nottingham' and a three or four digit number prefixed by the letter P.
- They usually have the name of the Private Hire company displayed on the side of the car.
- They cannot be hailed in the street. They must be pre-booked by telephone or in person at the company base.
- When booking always ask for an estimate of the fare as not all Private Hire vehicles have meters.
What to look for from your driver
- All drivers licensed by Nottingham City Council are issued with a badge displaying their photo and licence number which they must wear.
- If the driver does not have a badge do not get into the car.
Staying Safe
- Always use the seatbelts provided and where possible sit in the back of the car.
- Be aware of bogus taxi drivers. Always check the licence plate and side panels before going on a journey, and make a note of the number.
