Smartwater
Over 56,000 homes in the City are now protected with SmartWater. Find out about the innovative way to keep your stuff safe - that's got burglars on the run!
Smartwater has developed crime reduction programmes for law enforcement agencies worldwide that have been proven to reduce crimes such as burglary and auto-crime, by over 80% in some cases. Smartwater has a 100% conviction rate in the UK.
So what is it?
Smartwater is a property marking liquid, which can be used to mark items of value in the home. It's virtually invisible to the naked eye but can be identified and forensically tested from just a tiny sample. Smartwater can be issued to a family property or to each individual in a shared property and one bottle is sufficient for around 60 applications.
Each bottle is unique and once registered on to a national database can be traced directly to you from anywhere in the UK.
As your bottle of Smartwater is registered to your home address or your individual room, if you move, you'll need to notify the Nottingham Crime and Drugs Partnership (CDP) at cdp@nottinghamcity.gov.uk and we will update your record.
How do I get it?
If you live in the Nottingham City boundary, or pay your Council Tax to Nottingham City Council, you can obtain Smartwater FREE of charge.
You can arrange to get Smartwater through your local Police Beat Team, to find yours visit the Nottinghamshire Police website and search for your postcode on the home page.
What is the benefit?
Smartwater is a high profile product. Criminals know they can be easily traced to an offence if they have Smartwater on their skin or clothing. It's also a great deterrent to burglars, and because each Smartwater pack comes with window stickers, burglars will know that the property inside is Smartwater protected and can be traced to its rightful owner.
Smartwater is also being used in so-called 'Capture Houses', and has led to convictions of burglars.
Can it be removed?
No! Once applied, it's impossible to remove every last trace, and only a small amount of Smartwater is required by the forensic laboratory to make an identification.
Is Smartwater catching thieves?
Yes! All the custody suites in Nottingham are fitted with special Smartwater UV lamps, and anyone who is arrested is automatically scanned for the presence of Smartwater on them.
You may have seen Smartwater in the news being used to convict criminals, this will only increase as more homes are protected by Smartwater.
