Local Studies Library

The Local Studies Library, a part of Nottingham Central Library, is a special collection of materials describing the changing scene of the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire area from earliest times to the present day, the communities affected, prominent individuals and related subjects.

Family history

The collection has information about the City of Nottingham specifically, and the County of Nottinghamshire generally.

In addition to the materials highlighted below, the collection includes one copy of virtually every book written about Nottinghamshire people, places and subjects.

Resources available in the Local Studies Library include:

Accessing the material

The main Local Studies Collection is housed in a separate area of the Floor 1 of the Central Library - click here to find out about the Central Library.

Some materials are available for loan, but most of the stock is for use in the library only.

Much of the collection - including all loanable material - is listed on the Library Catalogue Nelib. However a significant proportion of the stock is currently still only recorded in card catalogues on site. Click here to visit the Nelib Library Catalogue.

The larger part of the collection is housed in areas accessible only to staff - requests to view material may be made at the Help Desk on Floor 1.

Because of the nature of some of the materials (e.g. newspaper cuttings, photographs, ephemera), many items are not individually catalogued but are filed according to their subject category.

For further information, including opening times, please contact the Local Studies Library or ask staff at the Help Desk on Floor 1 for help in finding what you want. Click here for more details on the Local Studies Library.
