Winter in Nottingham

Winter Fuel Payments.

A Winter Fuel Payment is an annual tax-free payment made to eligible people to help towards their winter heating costs. It is a lump sum and in most cases is paid automatically, but some people will need to claim.

Who can claim?

You could qualify for a payment in winter 2011/12 if you normally live in Great Britain or Northern Ireland and have reached the qualifying age  (born on or before 5 January 1951).

How do I claim?

If you got a payment last year or you will be getting a State Pension or other social security benefit (but not Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit or Child Benefit) during the qualifying week you will not usually need to claim. Otherwise you will need to make a claim.

All claims must reach the Department of Works and Pensions no later than 30 March following the winter being claimed for.

You can get a claim form if you need one, by ringing the Winter Fuel Payment help line on 08459 15 15 15 (08545 601 5613 for text phone users).

How much will I get?

The amount of Winter Fuel Payment you can get each winter can vary according to your personal situation. You could be eligible for a maximum payment of £300.

Cold Weather Payments.

A Cold Weather Payment is intended to help towards extra heating costs during very cold weather. A payment of £25.00 is paid automatically for each seven day period of very cold weather between 1 November to 31 March.

  • If you get Income Support, Employment and Support Allowance (income-related) during the assessment phase or income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, you must also receive a pensioner or disability premium or have a child who is disabled or under the age of 5.

How do I claim?
