Post 16 Education
The Education and Skills Act 2008 increased the minimum age at which young people in England can leave learning. This means that young people are expected to remain in education or training until the end of the academic year in which they turn 17 from 2013 and until their 18th birthday from 2015. This doesn't mean they need to stay at school.
There are several options available, which include:
- full-time education, such as sixth form, college or home education
- an Apprenticeship
- part-time education or training if they are employed, self-employed or volunteering for more than 20 hours a week

Apprenticeships
An Apprenticeship is a real job with training, providing hands on experience while you learn. There are over half a million apprentices currently working in England, each taking between one and four years to complete. Benefits include:
- Earning a salary
- Achieve Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4 qualifications
- Hands-on training and experience
- Learning job-specific skills
- Entitled to paid holidays
You can learn more about becoming an apprentice by visiting www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/apprenticeshiphub
Foundation Learning
Young people on Foundation Learning follow personalised programmes that are tailored to their particular needs, interests and aspirations - focusing on helping them to achieve their intended destination - such as GCSEs, level 2 college courses, Apprenticeships or skilled work. In some cases a young person's programme may be more about working towards supported employment or independent living.
