Individual Support For You and Your Child or Children
Our dedicated Customer Service Officers are on hand to guide you from the start of your fostering journey to approval. Once approved, we assign a professionally qualified named Social Worker as your main point of contact who supports you throughout.
You will have access to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service for consultations, as well as an expert medical team who oversee the health of the children in our care. We also have strong and established links with education colleagues to support foster children and their carers.
Schools across England now receive additional funding to provide extra support for children in care, and those adopted from care, known as the Pupil Premium Plus.
Every child we place for adoption has a personal support plan tailored to their and your needs which can involve professional support listed above.
You'll receive half day training during stage one and three days preparation training during your full assessment at stage two. As an approved foster carer or adopter you have opportunities to access further training.
We offer tax free fostering allowances plus a professional fee of up to £165 based on experience, circumstances and the needs of the child being cared for. Financial support is paid weekly to cover the day-to-day costs of caring for a foster child as well as payments to cover clothing, birthdays, holidays and other celebrations such as Christmas. For adopters, we provide a settling in grant and expenses during introductions. Ongoing financial support for is available for eligible children (this is means tested).
Out of Hours Support
Emergency support is available through our Out of Hours Service which is available all through the night and at weekends from 5pm - 8.30am.
All new foster carers can be linked with experienced carers who can be contacted to talk things over when you want information, advice, reassurance or just to share an experience. It's a great opportunity to make new friends and to become part of the Nottingham City Fostering Family.
Foster Carer Business Meetings
These take place every 6-8 weeks and give foster carers the chance to find out about any developments in the service or fostering. Its an opportunity to meet and talk with staff, senior council colleagues and other carers.
Foster carers can attend monthly Carer's and Children's Groups at venues across the city. This is dedicated time for carers to talk to each other in a safe space and gain support along with activities to occupy the children.
Our Adoption Support Group offers a chance for adopters to share experiences and network with others. Guest speakers are invited to talk on adoption matters such as pupil premium plus.
Adopters receive one year's free membership to Adoption UK. We are also members of New Family Social, a UK charity supporting lesbian and gay adopters and their children.
Foster carers receive free membership to The Fostering Network including training, publications, mediation (including 24 hour legal advice line), social networking opportunities and advice on many aspects of fostering.
Adopters Family Fun Days
We host two events per year where Adopters and their children come together for a day of family fun, activities and entertainment such as face painting, balloon making, circus magic and dancing.
Friends and Family Days
Recently approved adopters are invited to nominate family members and friends who will become a grandparent, aunt, uncle, godparent or friend to the adopted child and to attend a Family and Friends Day. This is an informal session aimed to provide information and to dispel some of the myths and fears around adoption.
We hold Christmas parties for adopters and foster carers which gives families time to get together and enjoy the festivities!
Bi Monthly Newsletter
All our foster carers and adopters receive regular newsletters including important information about any updates to the service as well as training opportunities, support groups and events. We also invite contributions to provide a source of motivation and inspiration to others.
