Ambitious for access - New fully accessible toilet and changing facility
in Nottingham City Centre
The
new toilets at Greyhound Street are a big improvement on the old underground toilets
of Old Market Square
and are part of the vision to transform the Square into a space which is more accessible, usable and
stylish.
Standard disabled toilets do not meet the needs of all people
with a disability - or their carers. Inadequate, inaccessible facilities can create barriers
to people with disabilities getting out and about.
But now in Nottingham the
City Council
is leading the rest of the UK in the provision of the new style fully accessible toilet called a “Changing
Place Toilet” which is in the city centre at Greyhound Street. After a £500,000 renovation
Greyhound Street now provides excellent facilities making life easier for many disabled people.
Thoughtful
improvements have been introduced:
- a height adjustable changing bench
and washbasin
- a
hoist system to lift people between wheelchairs and the toilet
- enough
space to ensure the bench and toilet can be approached from either side
By
providing enough space, privacy and appropriate equipment, Nottingham City Council is supporting carers
to look after people with disabilities in dignified and hygienic conditions without endangering their
own health. Putting careful thought into the design of toilet facilities
can open up a world of possibilities for people with severe disabilities - ensuring everybody can get
out and about to enjoy the city.
