Travel Safely by Taxi

Here you will find information to assist you when choosing a taxi. We all know that after a good night out on the town all you want to do is get home quickly, unfortunately there are rogue and unlicensed drivers out there who will take advantage of you given the opportunity.

Nottingham City Council licences two types of vehicles - Hackney Carriages and Private Hire vehicles. You may refer to them both as Taxis, but legally they are not the same thing. Only the London style Hackney Carriages can legally be referred to as a 'Taxi'.

A Serious Warning

If you get into a Private Hire vehicle without pre-booking it (that is if you stop it or find it in the street and have not pre-booked it through a licensed operator) you may not be covered by insurance.

Private Hire drivers call this 'flying' and they know they are breaking the law and committing an offence. If you are involved in an accident you will experience difficulty in claiming for any damages or injuries.

Our advice is to always pre-book a private hire vehicle by phone, website or an app.

Hackney Carriages

  • They have the Nottingham City Council coat of arms displayed on both front door panels
  • They display white licence plates on the front and rear of the vehicle and on a small plate inside the vehicle with the words 'Nottingham City Council', a three digit number, vehicle registration number and expiry date of licence
  • They can be hailed in the street
  • They operate from City centre ranks
  • They do not need to be pre-booked. However, we recommend the MyTaxi app as a great way to book Hackney Cabs. The app enables you to book now in advance, and you can track the taxi in real time on your phone. All journeys are recorded and on the meter, and payment can be cashless
  • Hackney Cabs have a fare meter and fare chart displayed inside the vehicle. Meters MUST be used for any journey within the City boundary, but a fare may be negotiated if the journey ends outside the City boundary. (For example, Clifton campus is within the City boundary, but West Bridgford is outside the City boundary)

Private Hire Vehicles

  • All vehicles licensed can carry up to a maximum of eight passengers dependant on make and model of vehicle
  • They display yellow licence plates on the front and rear of the vehicle and on a small plate inside on the vehicle windscreen with the words 'Nottingham City Council', a three or four digit number, vehicle registration number and expiry date of licence
  • They have the name of the Private Hire company displayed on the side of the vehicle
  • They cannot be hailed in the street and must be pre-booked by website, app, telephone or in person through a licensed operator base
  • When booking always ask for an estimate of the fare as not all Private Hire vehicles have meters

This list will be updated at the beginning of every month

What to look for from Your Driver

  • All drivers licensed by Nottingham City Council are issued with a badge displaying their photo, licence number and expiry date which must be displayed either on the person or in the vehicle at all times
  • If the driver does not have a badge do not get into the vehicle

 Staying Safe

  • Always use the seatbelts provided and where possible sit in the back of the vehicle
  • Be aware of bogus drivers. Always check the licence plate and side panels before going on a journey, and make a note of the vehicle licence plate on display
