Wollaton and Lenton Abbey Area Committee
Nottingham City Council’s Neighbourhood Management Service works to
improve the quality of life for residents through involving local people in decision making and changing
services provided by the Council and its partners to meet the needs of different areas. A central part
of this approach is the Area Committee structure. There are nine Area Committees covering the whole
City each comprising two or three adjoining wards. The Area Committees enable ward councillors, along
with local residents and other stakeholders, to influence what happens in each area either through direct
decision making – such as allocating an annual capital budget – or being consulted on matters that affect
the area – such as schools reorganisation. Click here to download the Area
Committees Terms of Reference. There is also access to an archive of meeting agendas, reports
and minutes of Area Committee meetings.
The Wollaton and Lenton Abbey
Area Committee takes in the two electoral wards of Wollaton West and Wollaton East and Lenton Abbey.
Your Area Committee Chair for 2008-9:
Councillor Dick Benson

What do Area Committees do?
- Work with communities to identify issues and needs.
- Develop actions that address the most important issues through partnerships
with service providers and agencies
- Scrutinise local services and make sure they are accountable to local people
Also,
all Area Committees produce a Local Community Plan through consultation with their community, service
providers and partner agencies. In order to progress these actions Area Committees lead on a range of
projects, for example: activities for older people; litter and graffiti removal; improvements to street
lighting; events to promote health and volunteering.

Description of Wollaton & Lenton Abbey area
The area is a pleasant, residential area located southwest of the City
of Nottingham. It is made up of two wards; Wollaton West and Wollaton East & Lenton Abbey. The wards
broadly cover the neighbourhoods of Wollaton Vale/Wollaton Road, Wollaton Village, Wollaton Hall and
Park, Wollaton Park Estate, Lenton Abbey, University of Nottingham and the Jubilee Campus. Each ward
is represented by elected City Councillors.
The area has a resident population
size of around 23,250. Approximately 50% is male and 50% is female. The principal age groups are 18-59
years and 65-84 years. The community is predominantly white (83.8%), with a significant Indian community
in Wollaton West and Black British in Wollaton East and Lenton Abbey (source: Census 2001).
Although
part of the City of Nottingham, the area creates an illusion that it is away from the city. It is an
extremely varied area with industrial parts like the University of Nottingham and the Queens Medical
Centre. It includes a mixture of council housing and privately owned properties, mainly built during
the 40's and 50's. The area has some of the most affluent and desirable neighbourhoods in the city but
does include pockets of severe disadvantage.
Wollaton and Lenton Abbey
have a relatively good physical environment with a number of open and green spaces carved up by main
road access routes into and out of the city. Neighbouring community and leisure facilities provide good
access to sports and recreation with the Tennis Centre, Bramcote Lane library and Beechdale Baths all
offering varied choices. The area includes a range of well used churches and community centres as well
as a number of high performing primary and secondary schools.
Neighbourhood Management and Area Committees
Each Area Committee is supported by a Neighbourhood Management Team,
a small team of Council officers who specialise in area working, developing partnership working, community
development/empowerment and resolving local issues. The Neighbourhood Management Team contact details
