Notice of Election - Election of District Councillors

Elections for local councillors for the wards of Basford, Bestwood and Bulwell Forest will take place on Thursday 19 October 2017. Here is all the information you will need to vote.

Register to Vote

Poll Cards

If you’re already registered to vote, you will receive a poll card shortly after 18 September 2017.

The poll card will have on it your polling number, your name and address, and the location of your polling station where you can vote in person on Thursday 19 October 2017.

If someone in your household does not receive a poll card and they are eligible to vote, or if the poll cards are not in the correct names please contact the Electoral Services team immediately – see below for contact details.

How to vote – Polling Station

Voting in person at a polling station is very straightforward and there is always a member of staff available to help if you’re unsure what to do.

Polling stations are open from 7am until 10pm.

When you arrive at the polling station:

  • Tell the staff inside the polling station your name and address so they can check that you are on the electoral register. You can show them your poll card, but you do not need it to vote
  • The staff at the polling station will give you a ballot paper listing the parties and candidates you can vote for. If you have a visual impairment, you can ask for a special voting device that allows you to vote on your own in secret. You can also ask to have a companion with you when you vote, or staff in the polling station may be able to help you
  • Take your ballot paper into a polling booth so that no one can see how you vote. Read the ballot paper carefully, it will tell you how to cast your vote. Do not write anything else on the paper or your vote may not be counted
  • Mark your ballot paper according to the instructions. A pencil will be provided for you to do this, but you may use your own pen if you prefer
  • If you make a mistake on your ballot paper, don’t worry – so long as you haven’t already put it in the ballot box, just let the polling station staff know and they can issue you with a replacement ballot paper
  • Finally, when you have marked your vote, fold the ballot paper in half and put it in the ballot box. Do not let anyone see your vote

If you are not clear on what to do, ask the staff at the polling station to help you.

Postal Vote

If you are away or cannot go to the polling station on Thursday 19 October 2017 you can apply to vote by post. Completed applications must reach the Electoral Services team before 5pm on Wednesday 4 October 2017.

Completed application forms can be returned by post, by email as a scanned attachment or by fax. If you are given a postal vote you will not be able to vote in person at a polling station.

 

Postal votes for these elections will be posted out around Tuesday 10 October 2017.

When you receive your postal vote, read the instructions carefully. Your postal vote pack will include your ballot paper and a postal voting statement. Complete both of these and return them immediately.

Your completed postal vote pack must be received by Electoral Services before 10pm on Thursday 19 October 2017.

Proxy Vote

If you cannot get to the polling station and do not wish to vote by post you can appoint someone to vote on your behalf. This is called voting by proxy.

You can apply to have a proxy vote for these elections only, but you must provide a reason, for example away on holiday. The person you appoint as your proxy for these elections must be a registered local government elector.

You can also apply to have a proxy vote for all future elections but you must provide a reason AND have your application signed by someone else to support your application. Only certain people can sign as a supporter and details are included with the application form.

Completed application forms must reach the Electoral Services team by 5pm on Wednesday 11 October 2017.

Completed application forms can be returned by post, by email as a scanned attachment or by fax.

If you have a medical emergency, or if your employment suddenly requires you to be away from home, you may be able to apply for an emergency proxy. The medical emergency or employment reason must have occurred after the deadline for ordinary proxy applications has passed, i.e. 5pm on Wednesday 11 October 2017. Your application will need to be signed by someone else to support your application. Only certain people can sign as a supporter and details are included with the application form. Your completed application form must be received before 5pm on Thursday 19 October 2017.

Your proxy will be sent a proxy polling letter which shows both your details as the elector and the proxy’s details. Your proxy may take this letter with them when they attend your polling station as it will assist the staff in finding your details on the register, however it is not compulsory.

If your proxy can’t get to your polling station they can apply to vote by post. They must complete and return an application form by 5pm on Wednesday 4 October 2017. If you are already a proxy and would like to vote by post please contact the Electoral Services team – see below.
