Nottingham welcomes freshers and returning students!

It's here! The new academic year is an exciting time for returning students and freshers alike; it's an important time to get settled in, prepare for study and of course expand your social life!

Nottingham is a great city, that's why you chose to come here obviously! Like many cities in the UK it has its share of crime but unlike some cities, we don't have a problem here with telling it like it is. That's because Nottingham has seen year on year reductions in crime rates, particularly in crimes which tend to affect students, such as burglary.

We still encourage you to be vigilant; after all, many crimes which affect students are opportunist crimes such as burglary and theft of portable items left in cars. There are many very simple steps which you can take to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime however and this site is intended to give you the ways and means to protect yourself and your valuables.

One of the best ways to deter burglars is by using SmartWater, a property marking liquid which has been used in Nottingham since 2001. You can learn more by clicking on the SmartWater page, and whilst you're there, don't forget to check out the quick way to make your valuables even less appealing to burglars by registering them on www.immobilise.com

The Easily Done campaign is backed by Nottinghamshire Police and Nottingham Crime & Drugs Partnership as part of their efforts to reduce crime against students in Nottingham.

Our advice is Easy to follow, but it works. In 2007, crime against students was down by 26% on the year before because students had logged onto www.easily-done.co.uk.

Smartwater is available FREE to residents in Nottingham City, or residents who pay their Council Tax to Nottingham City Council.

To check whether you are eligible or to book an appointment, call the Burglary Reduction team on 0115 915 3701 or email us at smartwater@nottinghamcity.gov.uk. You can also contact your local Police station or if you live in halls of residence your hall manager.

Over the next few months, this website will be undergoing some really exciting changes so don't forget to keep coming back regularly to stay updated on crime trends in the City.

Have a great term!
