Who is a Refugee?

A refugee is an individual who is compelled to leave their country due to various reasons such as persecution, violence, or conflicts. Seeking asylum is a fundamental human right recognised in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, guaranteeing the right to protection and assistance for those fleeing their home countries.

When does a person become a Refugee?

A person becomes a refugee if their asylum application is successful and they are given permission to live in the UK for a fixed period. Some refugees are granted indefinite leave to remain.

Who is an Asylum Seeker?

An asylum seeker is a person who has made a formal application for asylum with the Immigration Service (part of the Home Office) and is awaiting a decision on that claim.

What do Asylum Seekers receive?

Asylum Seekers receive basic housing (not Council housing), food vouchers and a certain amount of money from the Home Office while their claim is assessed. They are not allowed to work.

Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum

Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum is a community organisation working with and for asylum seekers and refugees in the city and county.

They provide friendship, support and advice to refugees and asylum seekers, such as assisting with completing forms, accessing services and activities, and generally helping them settle in a new environment.
